Detention Defense Grant Application

The Rooted Together Grant Program provides small, needs‑based grants to immigrant residents of San Mateo County experiencing urgent legal, financial, or safety‑related challenges stemming from immigration enforcement or detention. Grants are designed to increase access to legal representation in order to stabilize families and prevent long‑term harm.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Residing in San Mateo County.

• Is an individual or family member directly impacted by a case pending before an immigration court.

• Experiencing financial hardship related to detention, legal defense fees, or the impacts of a pending immigration court case.

• Is low-income and needs financial assistance that is not met through other available resources.

• Priority consideration for:

  • Detained individuals who are the main breadwinners of their families.

  • Families with children or dependents.

Grant Amount

Standard grant range: Up to 2,500, depending on need and available funds.
